The duct system in your home is a branching network of connections that delivers heated or cooled air to the different rooms. The duct system has a very important role to place in the cost, efficiency, and health of heating and cooling.
Heating and air conditioning systems get all of the credit (and blame) for comfort and efficiency, but it’s the air ducts that serve as the circulation system. Too often, ducts are improperly installed, leading to high energy bills, hot and cold spots, and other comfort issues.
While most duct systems will last a long time, there may come a time when you want to modify or replace them. Any repairs or changes to your duct system should be performed by a qualified HVAC technician.
If your duct system was installed over 20 years ago, pay particular attention to signs of duct problems. Speak with a professional HVAC technician about duct modification or replacement if you notice any of the following signs:
  1. Tangled, Kinked, or Damaged Ducts
Take the time to conduct a thorough inspection of your duct system. Over time, ducts can get damaged and worn down. Can you see any large holes? Sections of duct work that are separated or barely hanging on?
Sometimes, flexible duct work section can become ripped or torn. Duct work is also subject to damage if anything falls or weight is placed on it. If you notice bent, damaged, or tangled ducts, contact a professional right away.
  1. Airflow and Static Pressure
If you have an airflow problem in your house, you may need to modify the supply or return side of the system. Often, we discover that a new HVAC system doesn’t fit perfectly with the existing duct work system.
Sometimes, modifications are necessary, such as replacing plenums and grilles with larger (or smaller) ones, adding vents, and using a different filter. Often, the solution to your static pressure and air flow problems is making some adjustments to the existing duct system.
  1. Strange Noises
Shaking, rattling, and other strange noises from your air ducts is a clear sign of damaged or dirty duct work. Rattling and clamoring sounds usually mean the duct work is loose and not secured well enough. If you hear a whistling sound, this is most likely the results of air pass over and through holes and air leaks. Speak with a professional about duct cleaning, sealing and insulating.
  1. Hot and Cold Spots
Hot and cold spots, uneven temperatures, and airflow problems can indicate improper duct sizing, unbalanced supply/return air flow, leaks, or obstructions.
  1. Improper Installation
Remember that duct systems are only one part of your overall heating, air-conditioning, and ventilation system. If your HVAC unit was improperly installed, it’s likely that your duct system was improperly sized as well.
In addition to choosing the right-sized HVAC system, it’s also important that duct work is sized properly. Undersized duct work can restrict airflow and cause other problems, such as higher energy bills and shorter system lifespans.
Just like heat pumps and other HVAC units, your duct work must be properly sized and installed for maximum efficiency, airflow, and indoor air quality. If the indoor air handler is the heart, your duct work are the arteries and veins.
By being careful about who you hire to maintain, repair, and install your HVAC equipment, you can help ensure a properly installed HVAC and duct system.

Signs of Unbalanced Duct work. Contact an HVAC professional if you notice any of the following symptoms of unbalanced air ducts:
  • Hot and cold spots or uneven temperatures
  • Inconsistent or non-existent airflow
  • Condensation is forming on ducts
  • You notice air leaks from duct connections.
